shaving

Most men complain of shaving being a bad experience because of irritation and the damage it causes to the skin. Sometimes you may get scrapes and cuts by the razor leaving you frustrated and unhappy after what should be a pleasant experience. Well, shaving is worse for those with curly hair. Men find this morning activity very frustrating, which indeed isn’t a very positive or good way to start your day.

The reason for this discomfort can be curly hair, or shaving too close causing rawness of the skin and damage to the hair follicle. If you shave your hair without moisturising, or shave against the grain of hair, you can cause discomfort and increase the prevalence of ingrown hairs. So, to cut it short, the major causes of shaving displeasure are a dry skin, sensitive skin or dull razors.

Here is a list of techniques you can use to deal with this discomfort:-

  1. Trim long and hard-to-shave hair
If you’ve grown a beard which you can’t shave easily, it’s better to pre-trim your beard and then shave it. Especially all those areas where you may risk a cut due to long hair in positions like the jaw-bone area and your Adam’s apple.

  2. Clean your skin and wait
Before you shave, wash your face and wait for 5 minutes for it to dry completely. This is important because shaving on moist skin may cause irritation.

  3. Use a cream intended for a sensitive skin
Shaving cream intended for a sensitive skin tends to have ingredients like aloe, which doesn’t harm your skin. Sensitive skin shaving creams tend to have a smooth effect on your skin. Wait for 5 minutes after applying it, as it softens your hair hence making shaving easier. Even if you don’t have a very sensitive skin, such products are recommended as they don’t cause irritation after shaving.

  4. Dab and dry your skin, do not rub
After shaving, wash your face with water and dab dry it. Do not rub your skin right after shaving as it may just turn out to be a disaster.

  5. Apply a lotion or moisturizer after shaving
Shaving may leave your skin dry and rough. Apply an unscented, hydrating moisturiser which will prevent dryness and discomfort caused by shaving.
Follow these steps, and they will reduce the occurrence of the irritation and frustration you were once dealing with when shaving.
